How to soften scratchy makeup brushes?

Since the main purpose of a makeup brush is to ease the process of makeup application and make you look flawless, it becomes necessary that your brushes remain in proper shape and functioning. Not taking proper care of the makeup brushes NZ can lead to dirt accumulation which will eventually wear away the bristles and give uneven application. In addition to that, they may also get scratchy, thus giving skin abrasions. In order to prevent all these, make it a point to clean and also condition your brushes regularly. Depending on the type of cosmetics you use, makeup brushes need to be washed at least once a week. If you are into thicker and creamier products, you may even be required to clean them more often. Since it is not practical to have the brushes washed after every use, you can keep an instant spritz cleaner handy so that you can instantly clean and sanitize your brushes after every use. Given below are some tips on how to soften scratchy makeup brushes.

  1. Tap the brushes lightly a few times before wetting them with water. This will remove the loose powder and debris, thus making the rinsing process smoother.
  2. Place your brush underneath a running stream of water till all the bristles are thoroughly wet. You can also cup your palms or use a small bowl to dip in the brushes.
  3. When the bristles are thoroughly soaked, separate the bristle hair using gentle strokes. This will wash dissolve the clumps and wash away small debris.
  4. After your brush has been properly rinsed, remove it from under the tap and lightly squeeze the bristles to remove excess water.
  5. Take a small amount of facial foam and massage it onto the bristles. This should give rich foam and dissolve all the oil and grime. You can also swirl the brush around in a bowl of clean water to have each bristle cleaned thoroughly.
  6. Although a mild facial foam is good enough for cleaning makeup brushes, you can also go for the cleansers that are specifically formulated for the makeup brushes. These are gentler on your brushes and prevent drying and fraying of the bristles.
  7. Place the brush under running water and rinse away the foam till the bristle and handle are squeaky clean. Repeat the rinsing process a few more times and then squeeze the bristles to remove excess moisture.
  8. For stubborn and creamy cosmetics, have the makeup brushes first dipped into a solution of sodium bicarbonate for around five minutes. This will dissolve the creamy clumps and aid in cleaning.
  9. Gently tap the brush to remove excess moisture. Then soak the bristles in a makeup brush conditioner. Make sure that all of the bristles are coated in the conditioner.
  10. Leave the conditioner for around five minutes and again rinse the brush under tap water till it is clean enough.
  11. Squeeze the brushes to remove extra moisture and give a gentle tap to shake off excess water.
  12. Lay out the brushes horizontally over an absorbent towel and leave them to air dry.

The conditioning is the most important part of softening makeup brushes, so make sure that you are using the right makeup brush conditioner. Also, remember to place the brushes horizontally while drying. This will maintain the shape of the bristles and keep the water from seeping up to the handle. It is best not to blow dry after washing as it will dry out the bristles, thus making them rough.

Meth Contamination

Meth or Methamphetamine that also called as ‘P’ manufactured in New Zealand, which is one of the raising problems. It is not just causing problems for law enforcement, but also for the property owners and the common public is getting affected by the Methamphetamine residues, the by-products that are used in the making of meth.

What is P or Meth?

Meth or P is a pseudo name for methamphetamine. It is a highly addictive stimulant drug that can quickly enter the brain and affects the central nervous system when consumed. The drug increases the release of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, and causes excitement and euphoria and makes the individual additive to the drug.  The other standards nicknames for meth include ice, Jib, P, glass, and crystal.

How is it made?

Making meth is a simple process, and it does not need any chemistry profession or degree.  The meth can be produced easily in makeshift labs in homes, warehouses, garages, or it can also be produced in motel rooms.  You can also find the pseudoephedrine in the cold medicine that is available over-the-counter.  The individual who make the drug cooks all the required ingredients.

Symptoms of Meth Users:

The individuals who use meth frequently may experience insomnia, confusion, anxiety, and mood swings/disturbances and sometimes they may behave violently.  Some individuals may also get symptoms of psychosis, including auditory and visual hallucinations, paranoia, and delusions like insects crawling on their skin or something like that.

The people who take a small amount of meth or P can face similar kind of physical effects like any other stimulants like cocaine. The long-term meth users may face several negative health conditions like severe dental problems, extreme weight loss and the sores on the skin occurred by scratching.

How can meth affect health living in a contaminated property?

The contaminated property may cause long-term and short-term health effects when the property is exposed to meth residues.  If the meth residues or by-products are at low levels, then the health effects are less compared to the operating lab on the property.  You should know that the meth effects on children can be more if they are living closer to the contaminated property. The younger kids can absorb the contaminants in large amounts, and it causes severe damage to their metabolic system.

The manufacture of illegal drugs like meth is a very serious problem in Auckland. The meth labs can become contaminated, and it can cause severe health risks to the people who are living in that area. The lab owners have several statutory obligations to meet once the authorities found the contaminated property that includes:

  • Suggesting the future owners through LIM (Land Information Memorandum.
  • The lab owners must make sure that the meth residues should be eradicated to a safe level.

Symptoms of exposure to meth contamination: The symptoms that you can experience staying in a contaminated property include:

  • Nausea
  • Rashes
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Fatigue

You can do the screening tests on the property to find if it is contaminated with meth residue or not.

How sparkling water is wrecking your teeth

It’s considered the virtuous option compared to other fizzy drinks and often more refreshing than bog standard still water.

But sparkling water is not as harmless as most of us think – and is actually more acidic than wine and vinegar, a dentist has warned, according to Daily Mail.

“Most people have no idea that fizzy water is extremely acidic, it’s pH3 on the acidity scale” says Adam Stone, a dentist in London’s Harley Street.

“The bubbles erode your tooth enamel – and over time this causes painful, yellow cracked teeth.”

With pH7 being neutral, the figures make alarming reading:

* Carbonated drinks (e.g. sparkling water or diet cola) pH 3.0

* Juices & smoothies (e.g. apple juice) pH 3.4

* Wine pH 3.6

* Salad dressing (e.g. vinegar) pH 3.6

Indeed, Stone, from the Harley Street Dental Studio, claims he has seen a three-fold rise in people suffering from acid damage in the last 10 years.

“There are various causes: some people grind their teeth together, often due to stressful jobs. This wears away the enamel, exposing the underneath layer and causing pain.”

But the main culprit is our culture of constant sipping and snacking throughout the day, he says.

“Everywhere you go people are sipping smoothies, coffee, juices and fizzy water.

“These are all highly acidic and attack your teeth. Every time you consume something like this it takes your tooth enamel three hours to recover from it.”

When you eat something sticky or sugary, little acid attacks erupt in your mouth that strips your enamel of vital minerals. After the attacks, saliva swishes around your mouth, cleaning off debris and redepositing those lost minerals.

“But if you’re sipping all day, your teeth never get a chance and are under a constant acid attack,” says Stone.

“This can cause the protective enamel to erode, causing pain and sensitivity. It can also lead to decay.”

“Rather than sipping constantly, drink a glass in one go. Try to use a straw to direct the water down your throat rather than towards your teeth.”

What is enamel erosion?
Enamel erosion occurs when acids, including those in a normal healthy diet, attack the outer layer (the enamel) of teeth, making it softer and weaker.

Signs of enamel erosion can be:

1. Cracking: If tooth erosion continues into the advanced stage, the edges of the teeth can start to crack and have a rough feeling.

2. Yellowing: Teeth can become yellower as a consequence of enamel thinning because the underlying dentine becomes more visible.

3. Transparency: In the early stages of tooth erosion teeth can have a sand blasted look – or the tips of the front teeth to look transparent.

4. Sensitivity: As a consequence of the loss of enamel, the underlying dentine can become exposed. This can result in feeling sharp twings, discomfort or pain.

What causes enamel erosion?
* Fizzy water
* Lemon juice (almost as acidic as battery acid)
* Vinegary salad dressing
* Juices and smoothies
* Chewing ice cubes
* Alcohol
* Snacking between meals – it means your teeth are constantly at risk
* Exercising (exercising causes a dry mouth as moisture is diverted elsewhere in the body, increasing the likelihood of enamel erosion)
* Pregnancy (acid reflux during morning sickness increases the likelihood of enamel erosion)
* Bruxism – teeth grinding can weaken enamel

On the flipside:

A small amount of cheese can be beneficial if eaten after acidic food as it neutralises the acid.

How to prevent it
Give your teeth a 3-4-hour break between meals.

Avoid frequent snacks.

Finish your meal with a crunchy vegetable (carrot, stalk of celery, cauliflower, piece of bell pepper, sweet pepper, leaf of cabbage, a small stick of cut up swede, cucumber) to help clean the teeth and stimulate saliva.

Chew some sugar-free chewing gum for 10 minutes.

When you have finished brushing, spit out excess toothpaste but do not rinse with water! If you rinse with water, you will get rid of the fluoride. If you absolutely want to rinse your teeth after brushing, use a fluoride mouthwash.

There is now also a toothpaste that claims to be the first to regenerate lost tooth enamel.

Called Regenerate, it has been shown in clinical trials to create the identical mineral to tooth enamel – and is said to to bond directly onto the tooth in the minute or so that someone is brushing their teeth.

Fred Schafer was one of the scientists at Unilever involved in developing the product before his retirement.

Speaking to the Hippocratic Post, he said: “This should help to revolutionise tooth care in much the same way that the introduction of fluoride helped to reduce the number of cavities when it was added to toothpaste and drinking water.”

“We also created the Advanced Enamel Serum which you put straight onto your teeth which does the same job as toothpaste but in a much shorter time – usually in about three days.”

Thinking outside the grape

The fruit wine industry in NZ is coming of age. What used to be a hobby for back yard brewers is now a regulated and controlled industry. The New Zealand Fruit Wine Makers Association was formed in 1985 and holds annual competitions. These competitions are open to international competitors and to win an award is worth singing ones praises. Even more so when a wine receives the prestigious “Best Wine” award as well as gold, silver and bronze medals.

Tony Firmin is the winemaker and has consistently won awards year after year including twice over best wine. Below are some of the medals he has collected.

White Goose Wines have been exported world wide. Recently “Sparkling Trinity” was the wine of choice at the ordination of the Roman Catholic Bishop attended by 3000 people in Vanuatu. Customers are also found in England, Hong Kong and Australia.

Fruit wine making is a craft that has been developed from early farmers need to preserve the surplus of fruit to a dedicated industry supplying approximately 4 million litres of wine a year in New Zealand.(NZ. maf stats). The wine is easily drunk ( sometimes too easily) and has a growing appeal.

Whilst grape wineries are experiencing an over supply internationally the increase in preference for fruit wine is being noted. White Goose Winery are interested to hear from other intending distributors locally and internationally.

About us

About Us

Whakatane wine connoisseurs developed such a taste for Tony and Jutta Firmin’s fruit wines the couple installed their own winery at their White Goose Orchard at Awakeri.

The Firmins have owned the orchard for nearly 30 years but they only began using their fruit for wine-making purposes 13 years ago, not long before they opened their restaurant.

They grow strawberries, blueberries and feijoas to make both still and sparkling wines but Tony is halfway through planting a block of blackberries and he’s also put in 75 plum trees with more on order for next year.

Until recently the wine was made on the Firmin’s behalf by other wineries but Tony studied for his certificate in wine production by correspondence a couple of years ago while his daughter and her husband ran the restaurant.

Now he has received the go-ahead from the local authorities, and the Customs Department to make his own wine.

He has brought in equipment from Italy and although he describes his operation as just a “boutique winery” he says the machinery he’s using is the same as that used by the bigger wineries only on a smaller scale.

“One piece of equipment doesn’t look that large but it’s capable of crushing and mincing between 800 to 1000 kilos of fruit an hour.”

Tony says to begin with he will he trying to meet local demand for his fruit wines without worrying about the export market.

“At this stage we can’t make enough for our customers and we’re temporarily out of stock of both blueberry sparkling and feijoa still wine although I’m hoping to have some more bottled for Christmas.

Although the Firmins don’t export their wine some of it still ends up overseas.

A visitors’ book at the restaurant has been signed in recent weeks by customers from all over the world and Tony says many have bought a bottle or two to take home with them.

“Strawberry wine is the most popular followed closely by feijoa.”

Tony says he and Jutta have been invited to display their wines at a Food and Wine Fair near Auckland next month and with thousands expected to attend Tony says it will hopefully help promote Whakatane as well as their product. The English-born grandfather, who has been a sales rep and sharemilker in the past as well as orchardist and restaurateur, says he’s very excited at this new direction life is taking. “It just goes to prove that you’re never too old to change your career!”
